Sciatica is common term for pain going into one or both of your legs. The sciatic nerve originates in the lumbar and sacrum region. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It travels from the lower back and sacral area, into the buttocks, down the leg and into the foot. Pressure on this nerve creates pain down the leg known as sciatica. Sciatic nerve irritation can present as pain in the leg all the way to the foot, pain in just buttock and upper leg, burning/tingling in the same areas or a combination of all of the above. Common causes of sciatic nerve irritation include: inflammation, disc bulge or disc herniation, vertebral or SI joint misalignment, muscle spasm and arthritis. Many cases of sciatica respond very well to chiropractic care but it is very important to diagnose the cause of the sciatic nerve irritation prior to starting any type of treatment.
